Honduras Children - El Porvenir Kinder

Honduras Children is a diverse group of volunteers and sponsors collectively working to make life better for children in the La Ceiba area of the north coast of Honduras. United by a love for children and a desire to improve their opportunities in Honduras, we volunteer together to support their education, nutrition, families and communities. Honduras Children’s  programs are in the beach community of El Porvenir near the lively city of La Ceiba. The jungle rivers of the Pico Bonito National Forest and the sun and sand of the Caribbean Sea are just a few minutes away from where our volunteers live and work. We have built and are operating a kinder/ day care / feeding center for the children of poor families working in the pineapple fields and packing plants. The center also provides supportive childcare for grandmas who are struggling to care for young children. Our international volunteers work at the kinder providing programs for young children in the morning and enrichment activities for the older kids when they get out of school later in the day. Besides there is a new program which is looking for  volunteers who can make a commitment for the specific three month time period in which the children have holidays (November, December & January) to work together to run something along the lines of a “summer camp” enrichment program for the children at the El Porvenir Kinder. We do reading and math, English and a variety of other subjects based on the expertise of our volunteers.  There’s time for art, music and sports and also plenty of time to play!

Las Sonrisas de los Niņos:

Las Sonrisas de los Niños is a small, two-person project developed in a rural area just outside of La Ceiba. It is a kinder garden for kids that have to stay alone by themselves during the day, usually because both of the parents have to work. The project gives them a safe place to be. They also organize after school activities, like baseball games, extra courses and homework help. The volunteer will help with everything. This means anything from playing with the kids and cooking food to helping them brush their teeth. Volunteers are also able to organize their own activities and help with giving English classes.

Jungle School

Helping Honduras Kids opened the Jungle School doors in February 2007. This school currently has 56 students in grades 1-6 and 11 students in kindergarden and is located in a steep jungle area near the lower Cangrejal River Watershed, called Herradura in the Pico Bonito Mountains.  Many kids from the mountain villages have to walk for hours to the public schools and often they do not go to school at all. Some of the children attending this school have to walk three hours on slippery trails round trip every day just to have the opportunity to get an education and go to school.  Most of these children live in remote, isolated areas and face poor economic conditions. Jungle School will take care of these children and teaches them the basics of reading, writing, mathematics, geography and art. They need volunteers to split this group in ages to enable them to give more specific education. Besides the volunteers can teach the basics of English to the children and have their own input.

Hogar de Amor

The Hogar de Amor (Home of Love) is currently located in the city of La Ceiba.  At the moment it houses 21 orphan children who live in the home, with three live-in Honduran staff and rotating international volunteers. This orphanage has its own school and clinic, which is also used by the local people. The volunteers will help the kids with daily activities such as eating, washing, doing homework, washing their clothes and going to bed. They also need volunteers to assist the teachers in the school and it may be possible for volunteers to teach their own group. Volunteers with a social or medical background are especially welcomed.

Hospital Atlantida

The public hospital is situated in the center of La Ceiba. La Ceiba has more hospitals, but all other hospitals are private and for that reason very expensive. The poorest people visit this hospital and due to the fact that it is public and there is a lack of funds the level of hygiene and service is very low. There is a high demand for doctors, nurses and social employees. Employees which have experience with patients with HIV and AIDS are urgently needed although any volunteer with a medical background will be of great use to the hospital.

The volunteer will assist in the lessons and do different exercises with small groups of children. Although this is a school for deaf children it is not necessary to have experience with sign language.
